Details

Italian painter, also known as Giovanni Giacomo Semenza. He was a pupil of Denis Calvaert, then of Guido Reni. He was inspired by Reni and imitated his work with great skill. This is possibly a contributory factor in his success. He executed numerous works in the churches of Bologna, in particular a Marriage of St Catherine, and a Christ the Redeemer (in Santa Caterina). On going to Rome he obtained the patronage of the Cardinal of Savoy; and he painted there some frescoes, as well as paintings in oil. Among his pupils were Giacinto Brandi. //
