Details

Flemish painter, part of a family of painters, son of David Ryckaert I (the Elder), elder brother of the landscape painter Maerten Ryckaert. David trained with his father and became a master of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in 1607-08. He spent his entire career in Antwerp. He married Catharina de Merre in 1608; the couple had at least two children: Catharina (b. 1610) and David III. He was also active as an art dealer. David Ryckaert II was the teacher of his son David III, who became a prominent genre painter. His pupil Gonzales Coques was a leading Antwerp portrait painter and married his daughter Catharina. David II specialised in still-life paintings. The landscapes and genre paintings previously given to him are now considered to be the works by his brother Maerten and his son David III, respectively. In the past he was thought to have been a painter of landscapes as well, due to confusion with his brother Maerten; the genre paintings that were previously given to him are now considered to be works by his son and pupil David Ryckaert III. //
