MASTER of 1456

Artist

(active 1450s in Cologne)

Details

German painter. He owes his name to the series of twenty-four panels detailing, in thirty episodes, the life of Saint Ursula in the Basilica of Saint Ursula, Cologne. The last panel, depicting the saint's martyrdom, is dated 1456. Ten other recorded panels are connected to this cycle due to stylistic similarities. Both series are also framed by a red band containing text. Further works comprised mainly of smaller panels for private devotion have enlarged the Master's corpus. All panels show the influence of Stefan Lochner. It is thought that the master have run a workshop in Cologne. //
