Details

Jan Joris (Gillisz, Georg) van Vliet, Dutch printmaker, painter and draughtsman. He was active between 1628 and 1637 in Leiden. In 1632 he visited Antwerp and he worked also in Delft. He was a collaborator of Rembrandt in Leiden. Van Vliet entered Rembrandt's studio about 1630-31. No paintings are known to him, but he was important as an etcher. At least some of his etchings were apparently executed under Rembrandt's close supervision, possibly using Rembrandt's own drawings as models as Marcantonio Raimondi did with Raphael and as various members of Rubens's studio did under the master's direction. In addition to etchings after Rembrandt's drawings and paintings, van Vliet also executed a few etchings after Jan Lievens and Joris van Schooten. He made a popular print series called "the beggars" and signed his prints "JG Vliet fec". //
