Spanish sculptor. He played a fundamental role in the development of the new Baroque style in Castile. The sober manner of his early work evolved within the context of Roman mannerism. However, his later work is very much in keeping with contemporary trends. His innovations and creative powers, which extended to composition and iconography was very important. His early death at the age of forty represented a great loss to Spanish art. He worked on the Stations of the Cross in the Church of the Passion in Valladolid, as well as five statues on the façade of Nuestra Senora de las Angustias in the same city. A statue attributed to him of Saint Anne is in the Museum of Valladolid. He was the teacher of Gregorio Fernandez. //
