Details

Flemish painter, active in Antwerp. He owes his reputation particularly to the fact that he was one of Rubens's teachers and also later of his son-in-law Jacob Jordaens. His sparse surviving work consists mainly of rather small-sized paintings of religious subjects and portraits. There is documentary evidence that he was involved in the production of altarpieces. Originally working in the Mannerist style of Marten de Vos and Ambrosius Francken, he developed his own style which was a transformation of Frans Floris's Romanism executed on a smaller scale (such as in The Preaching of John the Baptist, 1601). He became a master of the Guild of Saint Luke in 1587 and served as dean of the Guild from 1597 until 1602. In his time he was a very respected artist, the number of his pupils was around 35. He married Elisabeth Nuyts, with whom he had five children. //
