Details

Jan I Keldermans (true name Jan van Mansdale), Flemish sculptor. He was the ancestor of the Mechelen architects family. The actual family name was Van Mansdale. Keldermans (Dutch for cellar man) was a nickname given to Jan I because the family house was nicknamed 't Kelderken (the cellar). The family was not happy with the nickname and usually continued to sign documents with the name "Van Mansdale". Jan I lived in the duchy of Brabant and worked as a stone mason in the county of Brussels, where he was best known for carving ornate balustrades. Because of this, in 1377 he was asked to take care of the decoration of the Grote Zaal in the Schepenhuis (Magistrate's Hall) in Mechelen. He also made the tombstone for Frans de Mirabelle, the governor of the county. //
