Details

Italian sculptor from Milan, active in Naples. Stylistic similarities with sculpture in Rome between 1450 and 1470, particularly with the style of Isaia da Pisa and Andrea Bregno, lead to the assumption of a hypothesis of a Roman formation before his arrival in Naples. His first certain work is the sepulchral monument of Bishop Nicola Piscitelli in the Cathedral of Salerno (dated 1472). In Naples he repeated several times a compositional scheme for funeral monuments (Tomb of Tommaso Brancaccio in San Domenico Maggiore, Naples): a sarcophagus with the reclining deceased, held by the personifications of three virtues. The figures of the virtues were characterized by certain traits that are the signature style of many of the works attributed to Jacopo: the draperies, the perfectly oval faces and the anatomy of the hands. The compositional scheme was renewed in the fifteenth century by Donatello and Michelozzo (Funeral Monument of Cardinal Rainaldo Brancacci in Sant'Angelo a Nilo, Naples). //
