Details

French painter. Relatively little is known about the early career of Dunouy, as we cannot be sure in whose studio he learnt his art. In 1781 he exhibited a landscape, otherwise unidentified, at the Exposition de la Jeunesse, and it is evident he found the means to travel to Italy early, as in 1787 he showed a View of San Cosinata at the Salon de l'Élysée. His finished works suggest the influence of Hackert, whom he may have encountered in Naples, and we may assume that he was exposed to the work of Valenciennes. As he was not a member of the Royal Academy he was unable to exhibit in the Salons until 1791, when he showed a large View of Italy with waterfall, figures and animals, the kind of painting that typified his more ambitious and decorative but sometimes rétardataire exhibited pictures. He seems to have returned to France in or about 1798, as it was in that year he exhibited scenes of Mont-Blanc and the Rhône at Lyon. He journeyed once again to Italy at the expense of Joachim Murat, then reigning in Naples, in 1810 and may have stayed as long as five or six years as he did not exhibit again until 1817 when he showed townscapes of Naples and Genoa. Two years later he presented four Italian and seven French views as well as a medieval historical subject. He continued to exhibit at the Salons until 1833, receiving medals in 1819 and 1827, and also published several series of engravings after his own pictures. //
