Flemish painter. He studied at the Academy of Bruges with Jan Antoon Garemijn. In 1779 he left the Austrian Netherlands of his birth to make his career in France. In Paris he was the pupil of Joseph-Benoit Suvée. He won the Prix de Rome in 1786. His main themes were allegorical and mythological subjects, and landscapes. He was the father of the painter Charles-Auguste van den Berghe. //
